This is one of the highest-quality ripe pu-erh teas among our selections.

A Renowned Pu-erh Tea Producing Region in Yongde County, Lincang, Yunnan

Mang Fei may appear to be an unusual name at first glance, but it is said to be a phonetic transcription of the indigenous language spoken by the local ethnic minority. The sound “Mang Fei” itself reflects the character of the indigenous language.

Mang Fei is located in the western part of Yongde County, Lincang City, Yunnan Province, approximately 15 to 20 km from the center of Yongde. Access is not particularly convenient, and during the rainy season, roads can become muddy, making transportation challenging.

The area is mountainous, with elevations ranging from about 1,800 to 2,100 meters. There is very little flat land, and villages are scattered along valleys and slopes. The soil consists mainly of red clay, with some areas where rocks are exposed.

Tea trees have been cultivated in Mang Fei for generations, and tea cultivation is deeply ingrained in the local lifestyle. Farmland is divided into small plots, with numerous small-scale tea gardens rather than large estates.

Mang Fei is the most renowned production area in Yongde County, with its reputation largely attributed to its distinctive soil characteristics.

The Alkaline-Rich Soil of Mang Fei – Producing Full-Bodied Characteristics

The terrain of Yunnan Province was once under the sea, and massive tectonic movements uplifted the land, creating the current mountainous landscape. In particular, the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates played a major role in shaping the region. These geological forces resulted in the steep mountains and dramatic elevation changes seen around Lincang, including Mang Fei. Consequently, limestone layers are found throughout Yongde County.

Lands that were once seabed tend to be rich in alkaline metals such as calcium, potassium, and sodium. Crops grown in such soil tend to develop full-bodied characteristics. Mang Fei is no exception — whether it’s tea, vegetables, or fruits, produce from this area is consistently full-bodied. Notably, other famous Pu-erh tea regions with similar full-bodied characteristics include Lao Ban Zhang, Xi Gui, and Ma An Shan.

Teas from Mang Fei are known for their rich character, filling the mouth with flavor and aroma that broadly expand. This distinct profile is a key factor in Mang Fei tea’s popularity. Mang Fei Ripe Pu-erh Tea also carries this full-bodied characteristic, offering a satisfying drinking experience.

Rare Naturally Cultivated Tea from a Famous Production Area

Since tea leaves from renowned production areas command high prices, many farmers prioritize increasing yields to boost income. As a result, the use of fertilizers is common in Mang Fei.

Tea trees grown with fertilizers grow faster, leading to lower cell density in the leaves. This results in tea with less depth and a shorter aftertaste. Mang Fei is no exception, and much of the tea from this region, despite being full-bodied, lacks depth and has a short aftertaste.

However, the Mang Fei Ripe Pu-erh Tea 2023 we sourced uses leaves grown in naturally cultivated, fertilizer-free, and pesticide-free gardens. This difference is clearly reflected in the deeper and more long-lasting aftertaste. It is extremely rare to find tea with such a long-lasting aftertaste from a famous region like Mang Fei.

Exceptionally Rare Small-Batch Production for Ripe Pu-erh Tea

Ripe Pu-erh tea is typically produced in very large batches, often nearing 10 tons per lot. Producers rely on low profit margins, making up for it with high production volumes.

Due to the rarity and high cost of the raw material, this Mang Fei Ripe Pu-erh Tea was produced in an exceptionally small batch, just over 1 ton — a rarity for ripe Pu-erh tea. Another advantage of small-batch production is that the limited quantity allows for ideal pan-frying and sun-drying conditions, ensuring only well-crafted raw pu-erh tea is selected for fermentation. As a result, Mang Fei Ripe Pu-erh Tea 2023 has exceptionally few defects, which is reflected in its clear and transparent taste.

Although it is from the 2023 harvest and still relatively young, high-quality ripe Pu-erh tea can be enjoyed even when freshly produced. Thanks to the superior raw material, it offers a clean and gentle profile with sweetness felt in the throat. For those wishing to enhance the aroma further, aging in an airtight, oxygen-free environment (unopened) for several years is also recommended.

How to Buy This Tea

For international customers, please refer to the following page for pricing:
https://hojotea.com/img/tealineup10.pdf

Please send your inquiry to us via email at info2@hojotea.com.

For customers in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, please click here to visit the product page.

https://shop.hojotea.com.my/collections/ripe-pu-erh-tea/products/mang-fei-ripe-pu-erh-2023-%E5%BF%99%E8%82%BA%E5%8F%A4%E6%A0%91%E7%86%9F%E8%8C%B6

Mang Fei Ripe Pu-erh Tea 2023 is now available.
